CCTV Is More Than a Camera: Designing a Useful Security System

A camera installed in the wrong place is not a security strategy. Effective surveillance starts with risk, coverage and operational needs.

Start with the risks

Identify entrances, exits, cash points, storage areas, restricted zones, parking, perimeter areas and other locations where visibility matters.

Choose coverage before equipment

Camera type, lens, mounting position, lighting, night performance and field of view should follow the required coverage.

Think about recording and retention

Resolution and camera count affect storage requirements. Define how long footage should be retained and who can access it.

Integrate access control

For appropriate sites, CCTV can complement access control, smart locks, video intercoms, gate automation and attendance systems.

Plan for the network

IP cameras depend on a reliable network and suitable PoE infrastructure. Network design is part of the security design.

Maintain the system

Cameras collect dust, cables degrade, storage fills and firmware becomes outdated. Scheduled maintenance keeps the system useful.

Extrion approach

We assess the site, define coverage, design the system, install and configure it, test it and provide handover/support.
