Good website budgets start with a clear plan: goals, pages, features and yearly costs.
"How much is a website?" is a bit like asking "how much is a building?" A two-room office and a hotel both have walls and a roof, but nobody would price them the same. Websites work the same way. A five-page company profile, an online shop that takes mobile money and a staff portal with logins are very different projects.
This guide explains what you are actually paying for, which costs come once and which come back every year, and how to compare quotations fairly. We use Extrion's own published package prices as the only concrete figures, because we could not verify any reliable "average" website price for Tanzania. Nobody can honestly give you one price that fits every project.
How to read the prices in this article
Published price: a price Extrion lists publicly. Marked with †.
Custom quotation: depends on your requirements. No figure is given.
Recurring cost: something you pay again every month or year.
We do not quote historical prices or invented market averages.
† Extrion published price (as listed on extrion.co.tz/packages, Oct 2026 — confirm before publishing). One-time, in Tanzanian shillings (TZS).
What makes one website cost more than another?
Most of the price comes from a handful of factors:
Size: the number of pages and how much each page has to do.
Design: adapting a ready-made layout or designing from scratch.
Content: whether you supply finished text and photos, or someone has to write and shoot them.
Integrations: connecting to payment gateways, SMS, accounting or other systems.
Ongoing care: hosting, renewals, security updates, backups and support.
The first five mostly affect the one-time build cost. The last one is recurring, and it is the part business owners most often forget.

Notice what a package does not settle: what happens after year one, after the support period, or when you need page 16 or product 101. Those are the questions that separate a cheap quote from a good one. You can compare the packages side by side on the Extrion packages page.
Domain registration and hosting
Your domain is your address (for example yourbusiness.co.tz). Hosting is the rented server space where the website and often your business email live. Both are normally recurring yearly costs.
For Tanzanian addresses such as .co.tz and .tz, registration goes through an accredited registrar, not the registry directly. The official .tz information centre, run by the Tanzania Communications Regulatory Authority (TCRA), explains that you choose a name, check that it is available and submit the request through a registrar's portal (Karibu .tz FAQs). It also lists the accredited registrars. The global root-zone record lists TCRA as the manager of .tz (IANA .tz delegation record).
We could not find an official registry fee schedule on these pages when we checked on 25 October 2026, so we do not quote one. Registrar prices vary, so ask for both the first-year and renewal price in writing.
Tip Make sure the domain is registered in your business's name, with your contact details, not only the developer's. If you part ways later, you keep your address.
Extrion's hosting and domain prices are quoted on request. See the hosting and domains pages, or ask for a custom quotation.
Design and development
This is usually the largest one-time cost. A ready-made theme adapted to your brand costs less than a design built from scratch. Every extra function, such as a booking form, a members' area or a product filter, adds time to build and test.
Revision rounds matter too. Silver includes one round; Gold includes three. Agree in advance what counts as a revision and what counts as new work.
Content, photography and copywriting
A beautiful design with weak text and blurry phone photos still looks unprofessional. Ask yourself honestly:
Do you have clear, finished text for every page?
Do you have good photos of your premises, team and products?
Do you need the site in English, Swahili or both?
If the answer is "no", budget for copywriting, a photographer or translation. These are often quoted separately. Late content is also the most common reason website projects stall.
Integrations and custom features
Taking payments online usually means connecting your site to a payment gateway or aggregator. This is a licensed company that links your website to mobile money wallets such as M-Pesa, Airtel Money and Mixx by Yas (formerly Tigo Pesa, renamed in the 2024 Yas rebrand), and to bank cards.
Expect two kinds of cost here:
One-time: building and testing the integration.
Recurring: the gateway's own set-up fees and per-transaction charges, which the gateway sets, not your developer.
The Bank of Tanzania oversees the national payment systems, so ask any gateway to confirm its licensing status. Other common add-ons include SMS notifications, accounting or stock-system links and multi-language support. Each needs its own quotation.
Maintenance, backups and security
A website is not "finished" on launch day. Software, plugins and security certificates need updating, and backups must be taken and tested. Free SSL certificates do exist, for example from Let's Encrypt, so ask what you are paying for if SSL is listed as a large separate item.
Diamond includes security hardening and backups. Whatever package you choose, ask who handles updates after the support period ends, and what that costs per month or year. For wider protection of business data, see our backup and disaster recovery service.
Warning A website that nobody updates becomes easier to hack over time. Budget for upkeep from day one.
One-time vs recurring costs
One-time (build)
Recurring (monthly or yearly)
Design and development
Domain renewal
Content writing, photography, translation
Hosting and business email
Payment gateway integration
Maintenance, updates and support after the included period
Data migration from an old site
Payment gateway transaction fees
Staff training
Paid plugins or software licences
Content updates and marketing
A useful habit is to look at the three-year cost: the build price plus three years of recurring costs. A quote that is cheap to build but expensive to run is not a bargain.
How to compare quotations
Quotations are only comparable when they describe the same project. Put them side by side and check:
Scope: number of pages, products and functions. Are they the same?
What is included in year one: domain, hosting, email, SSL?
Renewal prices: what does year two cost?
Content: who writes the text and supplies photos?
Revisions and support: how many rounds, and for how long?
Ownership: who owns the domain, the code, the content and the admin login?
Timeline and payment schedule: linked to clear milestones?
If one quote is far lower than the others, find out what it leaves out.
What a good proposal includes
A short summary of your goals and audience.
A page list or sitemap, plus a feature list.
Clear one-time and recurring costs, shown separately.
What you must supply (content, logos, photos, approvals) and by when.
Timeline with milestones.
Hosting, security and backup arrangements.
Support period and what it covers.
Ownership and handover terms.
Questions to ask a developer
Can you show me websites you have built that are similar to mine?
Will I own the domain, content and website files? Will I get admin access?
What exactly is included, and what would cost extra?
What will I pay each year after launch?
Who updates the site, and how are backups tested?
Can my staff update content themselves? Is training included?
How do you handle payments and customer data securely?
Google's own beginner series has a helpful episode on this topic.
Budgeting only for the build and forgetting renewals and upkeep.
Choosing the cheapest quote without comparing scope.
Leaving content to the last minute, which delays launch.
Letting someone else own the domain.
Asking for every feature at once instead of what you need now.
Ignoring mobile users. Many customers will see your site on a phone first.
Start with essentials and expand later
You don't need everything on day one. Many businesses start with a clear, fast site that explains what they do and makes it easy to call or WhatsApp them. Once enquiries come in, they add a blog, booking forms or an online shop.
Plan for growth, though. Ask whether your chosen platform can add those features later without a rebuild. Setting clear goals first helps you decide what is essential.
Print this checklist and complete it before you request quotations.
I have written down the main goal of the website (enquiries, bookings, sales, information).
I know who my main visitors are and what they need.
I have a list of pages and must-have features.
I know who will write the text and supply photos.
I have chosen and checked the availability of my domain name.
The domain will be registered in my business's name.
I have a budget for the build and for yearly costs.
I have at least two quotations that describe the same scope.
I know what happens after the support period ends.
I know who will keep the site updated and backed up.
When you get close to launch, the free website launch checklist helps you check nothing is missed.
Frequently asked questions
How much does a basic business website cost in Tanzania?
It depends on scope, so there is no single market price. As one concrete reference, Extrion's Silver package is TZS 850,000† for a 5-page site, including a .co.tz domain and hosting for the first year.
Is the domain and hosting a one-time payment?
No. Both are normally renewed every year. Some packages include the first year, so ask what year two will cost.
Can my website accept M-Pesa and other mobile money?
Yes, usually through a payment gateway. Expect a one-time integration cost plus the gateway's own fees per transaction. Extrion's Tanzanite package includes mobile money and card payments.
Why do quotations for the "same" website differ so much?
Usually because they are not the same: different page counts, design effort, content, support periods or renewal terms. Compare scope line by line.
Do I need a .co.tz domain or a .com?
Either works. A .co.tz address signals a Tanzanian business. Some businesses register both. Registration for .tz names goes through accredited registrars.
How much should I budget for maintenance?
It depends on how often the site changes and how complex it is, so it needs a quotation. Ask for a fixed monthly or yearly maintenance price before you sign.
Next steps
Write down your goals and must-have features, then work out a three-year budget rather than a build price alone. Compare quotes on equal scope, and keep ownership of your domain.
