Power cuts, surge damage and the UPS question

The Extrion Tech News Brief No. 01

Welcome to the first Extrion technology briefing. Once a month we pick one practical topic, add the security notes worth acting on and point you to guides that save a call-out.

This month: power. Outages and voltage swings sit behind a large share of the faults we are called for in Zanzibar. Recorders reboot and lose hours of footage, PoE switches and adapters burn out after a storm, and hard drives that lose power mid-write start reporting errors weeks later.

Three habits prevent most of it. Put the recorder, the internet router and the core network switch on a UPS, so a short cut does not interrupt recording or drop the connection. Fit surge protection and proper earthing on cable runs that leave the building, especially to outdoor cameras and roof equipment. And test the UPS: batteries wear out quietly, so switch the mains off for a minute every few months and check that everything stays on.

Security updates

Update the firmware on your CCTV recorder, cameras and internet router, and change any password that is still the installer's default.

If you view cameras on your phone, use the manufacturer's app rather than opening ports on the router. Port forwarding and UPnP leave the recorder visible to anyone scanning the internet.

Guides worth reading

Useful developments

Fibre connections are reaching more homes, hotels and offices in Zanzibar. A faster line only helps if the network inside the building is ready for it, so before upgrading, check that the router, the cabling and the Wi-Fi can carry the extra speed. A short site survey answers that in an afternoon.
